There are two ways of going to Documenta; one is to go during the opening and another is to go during the exhibition along with the ‘normal’ people. For several reasons I was not able to go during the opening, why the trip got postponed to the very last weekend of the 100 days long Documenta 12. I had imagined that all the fuss accompanying the opening of such a major event would be long gone at the 99th and 100th day. Nevertheless, the small town of Kassel was buzzing with people resulting in looong queues and fights against tour groups and excited photographers. The nightmare had its ups and downs all though the overall impression was fairly good. So why mention the big crowd of people? Because the ups reached higher than expected and the downs fell lower than normal as one’s mood was constantly put to the test by the masses.
